Rhodes, The Knights’ Island

rhodes hilton

Astonished and amazed from my recent trip to Rhodes, part of the Dodecanese islands.  Starting from the revamped airport, the swiftness in exiting with your luggage at hand and the first impression of truly friendly locals, remaining authentic besides the flooding of mass tourism on the island. There are endless accommodation choices, from the basic bed & breakfast to luxury seafront resorts and boutique hotels right within the ancient walls.

The impressive medieval old town and well-preserved remnants of its occupation, by the Knights of St John, left me speechless! Walking the Street of the Knights is a must experience, let alone a guided visit to the Palace of the Grand Masters.  Then there is the food and feasting at one of the myriad tavernas, a true delight followed by clubbing within the walls or at touristy Lindos with its cobbled alleyways and whitewashed houses. I was also stunned by the greenery, even during the summer months, with lush forests at the countryside.  A word of caution;  when driving around beware of the wild goats that roam around freely, not bothered by the passers-by.

For some sun and sea relaxation there are stretches of beach, either modern beach clubs or more secluded coves with small kiosks.  What is astonishing is that Prasonisi Beach is the meeting place of two seas, the Mediterranean and the Aegean !

A perk for sea lovers is daily cruises to nearby alternative islands, such as low profile Chalki and quaint Symi. To sum it all up Rhodes is a very promising destination, suitable for all budgets and all type of events.
