Call it a matter of habit or an obsession, but when in Athens I follow a certain ritual during my free time.
For a mid-morning break I head to Sweet Alchemies, an extraordinary confectionary headed by celebrity pastry Chef Stelios Parliaros in posh Kolonaki, stocking up on vanilla cookies and olive and cheese savoury biscuits. Towards lunchtime, which can be any time in Greece, I long for a handmade pita at Yoleni’s Greek delicatessen, a super spot for finding pure olive oil, aromatic herbs and honey. Then I pop in right across at the Apivita Experience Store for a beauty fix the natural way, since all face and body products are produced with indigenous plants, Greek flora, herbs and potent ingredients from the bee kingdom. My weakness is dry fruit and nuts found in abundance at traditional Matsoukas, a paradise for such treats, so along the way I stock up with all these goodies. When I’m closer to the tourist famous Plaka area, in search of unique give-aways, I love to look around at the newcomer store Thiki.
