Troodos

Kakopetria is situated on the north-eastern slopes of Troodos, 2200 ft. above sea level.  This very charming village, in the Solea Valley, is a popular hill resort and famous for its fruit-growing.  It is the highest village in the valley and is divided up by small streams that flow into the valley.  Old Kakopetria is a unique example of traditional mountain village architecture, with narrow picturesque streets, two storey houses with wooden balconies and pretty tiled roofs.  The church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, meaning “Saint Nicholas of the Roof”, stands about 5 km to the north of the village and once belonged to a monastery.  It is completely painted with murals dating from the 11th to the 17th century and considered one of the most interesting Byzantine churches on the island.
